I wrote about Rollo climbing the last time July 29th 2008:

The formula for best climbing is good boulders, great weather and best friends. That's how things went down last weekend:) My old mates came from Joensuu to test what the Hiidenkirnut had to offer. Here are the best shots from the set. Thanks Kleme and Henkka for the visit, meant alot to me, and Juzzi try to stay in shape for the next round..ok?

This was the last time climbing in Lapland, for me it's time to move on.. Frankly, I will come to check Hiidenkirnut and Petäjävaara as well as Sonka once again in the future, have to! Especially Petäjävaara is haunting on my mind. I know that the team Rollo will keep on the supreme work making routes and films and competitions. Cu guys and carry on!

Jätkät istuu pyramidin päällä. Se klassikko jäi mieleen kyllä hyvin, pitäis tulla ens kesänä kyllä käymään Rollossa.. hmm. Vieläkö on Lapin topoa saatavilla?

If one place in Lappland, it's Petäjävaara where I want to return. Here is a story about my visit in the year 2008, when the Rollo guys were opening lines there. I managed to leave my mark by opening an easy trad line "Fleikki Leikki 5".

Ten days ago (written in July 2008) I went along for route making to this new place called Petäjävaara. It has a lot of potential and natural beauty. Height varies from ten to fifteen meters and the granite is healthy and solid. The drive takes perhaps 80 minutes from Rovaniemi, depending of course how many reindeers are blocking the road on the way;)

At the moment there are already some routes (5?) and space for 30 at least + 50 or more boulders, a place worth visiting definitely in the future! The access is uphill walk for 15 minutes, but the landscape is so nice that small walk doesn't matter. Active climbers in the local club (RVK + Rollon Kiikku Ja Juoma) are doing a lot of volunteer work for developing the area and this crag. Good job guys and gals!

No joo, vieläkö on viikkokisaperinne pystyssä? Näin kuvia uudesta 2011 keivistä, hienoo jälkee on Rollon kollit tehny. Harmitti kovasti, kun en päässy tulee lappikuppiin. Mutta mutta, jatketaan arkiston pöyhimistä..

About Sonka I had written:

Yesterday we went climbing in Sonka. It's located north-west from Rovaniemi, 30 minute drive. Hard granite, slopers and crimpers. Coarse skin-eater rock provides alot of friction, as long as there is skin:) I was there for the first time and managed some warm-up onsights in a relatively chill weather. It seems that there are many intresting routes for projecting for the future. Many cool sixers and sevens:) Topo is found from the official topo-book of Finland.
On the ground there were still some small puddles of snow, but that didn't matter the access or anything. And today it's snowing in Rovaniemi. Can't really believe it, yesterday was perfect spring weather with blue sky and all. Have to go climbing again as soon as the weather allows, but it can take longer than one week! (May 11th 2008)

 

There are couple of routes that I really would like to try again in Sonka, including this short, but pepperish arete.

 Aki R. & Dennis vuonna 2008. Sellasta settiä oli sillon, melko viilee päivä, mutta mitäpä se haittais. Toinen noista herroista träditti mäkeä ylös, kun toinen vasta kaivoi valjaita repusta, sekin jäi mieleen. Ei tosin tuolla reitillä mikä on kuvassa.
